Artist Statement
Books have always been a source of fascination for me, the way they look lined up neatly on a shelf, the way they feel in your hand, the way they can completely transport you to exotic locations and take you on amazing adventures on the most mundane of days. I consider myself first and foremost a storyteller, and in all my work as a book artist as well as a painter, illustrator, sculptor, and fiber artist, it is the use of narrative and emotional journey that drives my work. I am heavily influenced by fairytales, myths, and legends of the past, but it is with a modern sensibility that I tell my stories, whether it is through imagery or text. With roots in production design for theatre, film, and opera, my design aesthetic has always had a flair for the theatrical, and it is this love of drama that I bring to my artwork, both as a bookmaker and as an illustrator. Much like a theatrical performance a book is about an experience, and it is through careful attention to detail that I strive to immerse my readers in to the worlds I have created for them.
